“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear… I will permit it to pass over me and through me”. This is from Frank Herbert’s “Dune” a sci-fi author and dune, made into a movie that kind of stuck with me for many reasons. First the art direction, it’s fantastic, each planetary dynasty having their own style, architecture, fashion and the list goes on. The lighting is just fantastic and has incredible hues from planet to planet, all very saturated and setting the scenes, and I could go on, but I have digressed, one of the things that stuck with me was that quote, used by the Bene Gesserit’s to control their minds, and it brings me too what’s been on my mind.
Fear cripples everything, your body, your mind, everything. It leads to some of the ugliest character traits, arrogance, jealousy, anger, loudness, control issues to mention a few. It forces you into a corner like a caged animal, lashing out at everything, by aggressive assertion, and the need to be right and in control. It blinds you, stops you from hearing, and sets you up to become even more fearful by alienating you from those around you, and underlining the fact that you are alone and afraid.
I makes you horde, keep up with the Jones’s, accumulate more and more without understanding that fear is afraid of the real things you need.
The rude ugliness I see around me everyday just proves the above, and I know this because I’m afraid a lot of the time, and I catch myself venting outward, and it makes me not like what I am, but I see it, and I work against it, and I try not see the traffic as an issue, but rather appreciate the beautiful sea air, that I inhale as I make my way to work. I have never been so happy and free as the moment I had lost nearly everything.
Yesterday i started an awesome piece on Dustin, but it’s not complete, and I’m afraid you will have to wait a couple of weeks to see it, but what I can show you is the piece I did for Hans. Hans is a pilot who wanted to commemorate his 15 years of flying by doing an aviation inspired half sleeve, and wanted to start with a Cheetah Fighter. The one he chose has a cool shark mouth and South African flag paint job, and as we wanted to make the most of that, I did the front of it descending through evening clouds. The clouds will be the background to the rest of the sleeve in time. Hope you like it.
I woke to this song this morning…
Oh one last thing to share with you, Pierre just made up and delivered my signet ring…. a tongue in cheek exercise, and instead of the usual initials and all that, I had him engrave FTW on it…. I pretty sure you all know the meaning, I think it’s awesome…lol
